| We realized, after only two seasons, that the steep slope of the path built in 1975 to reach the top of the dam from the Small Scenic Train terminal was discouraging the tourists, so a Monorail Cog Railway was opened to the public 1977.
Unique in the world, this attraction was compiled of two convoys made up of one engine, running on petrol, and a wagon with 5 seats. The restrained capacity of this system, at first developed for people who had difficulty in walking, and its popularity made the waiting time before boarding rather long. This equipment, which was not designed to function intensely at an altitude of 2,000 metres, was not very trustworthy. It was dismantled in October 1988 after having carried 170,097 passengers. It can be seen as a monument at Le Châtelard Park Main Entrance. The Minifunic replaced the Monorail in 1991. Visitors can leave the Attraction Park when they arrive at the Emosson Lake Landing, situated 30 meters above the top of the dam. (Keep your entry ticket). |
