During the construction of the first dam (the Barberine), which is now submerged under 42 metres of water when the third one (The Emosson Dam) is full, a steam train was built for the construction site on a 750 mm rail by Martin, Baratelli & Co.
When the work on the Barberine Dam was finished, the construction site's steam train was dismantled and the railway line lifted. The track left by the railway line became a pedestrian way which leads to the Emosson mountain pastures and the Barberine Dam.
The Attraction Park's Small Scenic Train which runs on a 600 mm Decauville rail is often called ''The Train of the Abyss''. It was built by railway admirers alongside its founder, Mr. Bernard Philippin, on the 1850 metres of that old pedestrian way that had not been submerged.
It was put into service at the same time as the opening of Le Châtelard Attraction Park on the 12th July 1975. |
